Milford Sound to Christchurch

After a great November roadtrip along the west coast and Queenstown, we will be traveling back from Milford Sound (staying in Te Anau) to Christchurch. We have 2 days to do this, and I was wondering your opinions on the best place to overnight. I hear the drive from Dunedin to CHC is a bit mundane; but is Dunedin worth it? Or is the "middle route" more scenic and worth missing Dunedin? Thanks for your opinions!

It takes around 8 hours to drive TeAnau to ChCh by the inland route, and around 9 hours via Dunedin, so a break somewhere in the middle is a good idea.

Omarama or Tekapo are obvious choices on the inland route, with Tekapo being slightly more interesting than Omarama. You could also detour into Mt Cook if you could get accommodation

On the East coast Dunedin would be the best choice, otherwise Oamaru. Dunedin is around 4 hours from TeAnau, and Oamaru another hour past Dunedin.

Two days from Te Anau is a rush. Distance-wise Omarama or Twizel would make the best stop. Neither are interesting towns, but do have accommodation. This would give you time to detour in to Mt Cook on the second day if the weather looks promising.

Hi Emily,

I feel your best option is Via SH8 through Omarama driving alongside Lake Pukaki (possible stop at the Alpine Salmon farm for a coffee and a free feed of the Salmon) onto Aoraki/ Mt Cook Village for the night Total driving time would be approx 3.5 hrs. As it is November you will have plenty of daylight hours and providing you have your accommodation booked it shouldn't matter what time you arrive with all the sightseeing along the way. There may even be time for a little walk around the area

Next day drive to Lake Takepo stroll from town over the new fly bridge to Church of the good Shepherd, Sheep dog and views of the lake and then head for CHC.

IMO Queenstown to Dunedin and then to CHC would be too long a journey in two days

GTS, they are originating in Te Anau! So travel to Aoraki / Mt Cook Village would be closer to 5.5 hours.

Good pickup deschenke,

Let me start again Emily sorry for the mixup with your starting point being Te Anua

Day 1 Te anua to Cromwell for a break and a feed (Lake Dunstan /Historic Precinct nice spot to stroll around) then continue through Omarama with O/N at Twizel Just an O/N stop but after 4.5hrs driving relax for the rest of the day

Day 2 drive alongside Lake Pukaki (possible stop at the Alpine Salmon farm and then to Lake Takepo stroll from town over the new fly bridge to Church of the good Shepherd, Sheep dog and views of the lake and then head for CHC via the scenic route SH72/73 via Rakaia Gorge. Approx 4 hrs driving O/N Christchurch
