Looking for interesting site on I-70

Hi,

We are driving on I-70, coming from Denver and going to St. Louis. We have three kids between 4 and 10 and wanted to know a good place (half-way?) where we could stay and do some activities. That could be an interesting historical site, some outdoor activities or other things that kids love. It is only for a day or maybe half a day.

I am not familiar with Kansas and completely ran out of good ideas.

Can anybody help?

Also looking for a place to stay for a night.

Thanks,

Joerg

The first three that come to mind are (West to East):

Castle Rock Badlands near Quinter http://www.kansastravel.org/castlerock.htm

Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays www.kansastravel.org/sternbergmuseum.htm

Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure near Salina http://www.rollinghillswildlife.com/

Or perhaps visit Lucas with all of its quirky attractions http://www.kansastravel.org/lucaskansas.htm

The Eisenhower Museum, Greyhound Museum, and a small Old West town in Abilene...clean town, and they have good hotel/restaurant choices although probably not half-way.

You could stop here in Topeka to see the State Capitol, zoo, historic Brown site, and shop (lots of hotels/restaurants on Wanamaker Rd)or even the very west part of Kansas City where the race track is there they have lots of shopping, restaurants, and hotels right there at I-70 and I-435.

Along I-70 in the eastern part of the state, The Bug Zoo, Sunset Zoo and K-State's Call Hall Dairy Bar in Manhattan would be a good spot.

Fort Riley, right off the freeway also has a number of museums and attractions.

I would ditto the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure outside Salina on I-70; as well as the Eisenhower Complex at the south end of Abilene on KS-15. Presidential Library, Museum, Chapel, Boyhood home, and burial site of Ike and Mamie (at the Chapel).

If you stop in Abilene, and your family loves fried chicken, I recommend you try the re-created, Brookville Hotel restaurant at I-70 & KS-15. Everything is served "family style," and their chicken is great. Fun place.

There are several motels near I-70 in Abilene...more in Salina.

I agree that the kids would likely love Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure. All suggestions above are very good. Also, Milford Nature Center in Junction City.

Feel free to check out the Kansas I-70 Ready-Made Adventure for other ideas... https://www.travelks.com/s/index.cfm?aid=118.

Have you found a place to stay yet?
