need help with itinerary.. January 2018 - 10 day trip

Hi, My husband and I are looking at using a travel company for the first time in CR. Does anyone know anything about Pacific Trade Winds- they appear to be local. Wondering if they charge more for tours, hotel bookings etc... ? Are we better off booking our own hotels and just using them for transportation and certain tours ? Our Itinerary is

Arenal - 3 days Monteverde - 3 days Manuel Antonio- 3 days.

Re beaches - we hear that Manuel Antonio is beautiful but can be very crowded, Is there another equally nice beach area that is not too difficult to reach from Monteverde?

We are in our late 50's and experienced travelers. Enjoy, easy hiking, nature, wildlife beaches, museums, local culture.

Thanks for your help

I don't see the need to use a travel company. You suggest a reasonable itinerary and can make the arrangements yourselves. Every good venue - hotels, transport, activities - will have an interactive website, with people replying to e mail inquiries.

I don't believe that Manual Antonio will be exceptionally busy in January, unless you're there for the first week. It's also nice if you go a little further south, to Uvita or Dominical.

Thanks for your input... We don't have a car so wonder if it will be a long trip to Uvita or Domincal? Any suggestions for things to do in those areas are much appreciated. thanks

For more info on activities in Uvita and Dominical, see https:/… .

Also search the forum for many prior threads about these destinations, incl. https://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g635755… . You can filter the search results by Date vs by Relevance, which is a default setting there.

For Travelling Options between CR areas, see the Top Qns about CR on the right of the screen: https:/…Transportation.html .

We found Manuel Antonio park (trails and beaches) very crowded. There were a lot of animals, but much more ppl. You only need about 3-4 hrs for the trails (+ more time, if you want to stay on the beach), as it is a comparatively small park.

This is one of the sites for researching transportation- https://geckotrail.com/transportation/ .

You can arrange transportation, either private drivers or shared shuttles, to any popular location. Uvita and Dominical are just a bit further south. If an extra hour is a problem for you then you can stick with Manual Antonio.

You will find the same types of activities from almost any beach location. It's easy to search "things to do" on this site. I would think that you'd be maximizing time on the beach while you're on the coast. You'll experience different types of adventures in your other two locations.

If you select well-run hotels, you'll find activities listed on their websites and management will help you with the arrangements.

Thank you... now looking at revising our trip and skipping Manuel Antonio in favour of either Samana or Nosara? Any thoughts on which has nicer beaches and better things to do?

Our goal is to get a feel for different experiences and we enjoy the beach but would also want to explore the town and the area as well It is clear that there is a lot to see and do in Costa Rica and we can;t do it all in one trip ...

There would probably be the most for you to do around Manual Antonio and I don't believe that it would be terribly crowded in January, assuming you're not there the first week.

The beach you select may depend upon where you're flying into. If it's Liberia, stay further north on the coast makes sense, anything from Tamarindo down to Manual Antonio. If it's SJO, it's more possible to go south of MA.

Since these beach areas all offer similar activities, you can make the decision based on the lodging you find at each location. Your experience will be largely impacted by what your hotel has to offer. Pick one with a good website.
