What about crime?

I will be spending a few days in Santa Elena and Playa Flamingo.

I have read that while there is little violent crime, there is a great deal of petty crime. Such as, never leave anything valuable in your car, even at a National Park parking lot.

I understand that crime is everywhere; my wife's car was broken into in a YMCA parking lot. Is it like that, or worse? I mean, it is hard to driving from hotel to hotel and stop places without having your luggage in the car.

I don't want to be paranoid, but I even less want to lose my luggage.

Yes, it is not wise to stop with luggage visible in your car. One way around it is to rent a sedan with a fully concealed trunk & never get into the trunk in public parking lots. Another option is to limit your stops to places with security guards and/or parking lit attendants & tip them before you go inside.

I have rarely heard of these types of incidents in the Monteverde area but I would still take precautions. The warnings about petty crimes seem to be more prevalent in the beach locations.

Our government rates CR as a country where travellers should "exercise high degree of caution" vs "normal security precautions" in some other countries . See under the Safety tab, if interested- https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/costa-rica .

There are a lot of prior discussions about safety tips, incl. for car travel. Search the forum, use the line above, then sort the results by Date. Also read safety tips here:

https:/… and https:/… .

If you look under the Top Qns about CR on the right side of the screen, the 2nd topic is Safety precautions to avoid crime.

"Even at a national park parking lot"? No. ( Why "even"?). See this recent thread about the parking lot by Manuel Antonio - https://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowTopic-g309293… .
