Is Lake Atitlan safe?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Lake Atitlan. Is this area safe to travel to at this time? I am reading conflicting information.

Thank you. Any information is appreciated.

It is generally safe in the towns. Hiking between villages can be a problem. Check with your hotel for updated info.

If you read the state department travel advisory you're going to read that there is a civil war going on.Or that the whole country is on fire. But just ask the bunch of expatriates enjoying life to the fullest living around the lake. And as DonCraig says the risk is when you venture hiking around the lake by yourself.

I have been living in the Lake Atitlan area for over five years, and I have never felt more secure. This area has long been a haven for tourist and ex-pat residents due to its relative safety.

While minor non-violent crimes have happened, and will happen in the future they are the exception rather than the rule. As the previous post states, it is best not to wander into the wilderness on your own. There are plenty of guides available to assist you, and their value lays not just in keeping you safe, but in showing you points of interest that you would miss other wise.

Yes Lake Atitlan is safe. I live here with children and we don't have safety issues. Don't stay out at night to late or come back by yourself late in the night.

Better to be with friends.. If you walk the trail between Santa Cruz and San Marcos don't go on week end it is when the robberies happen most of the time.

There is probably zero chance of getting my husband to not take walks alone in the early morning since I have already hyped Atitlan as a great walking destination.

I was thinking of staying at El Jaibalito but wonder where might be a place where these confrontations are least likely to occur?

Safest would be the pathways along the lake at Pana since there are restaurants along the lake.

I live in Santa Cruz and walk between here and Jaibalito several times each week. There is no danger in this area. If you are staying at Casa del Mundo or Vulcano Lodge, both in Jaibalito; then you are perfectly safe to walk at any time of day.

If you want to explore further than the easy to find lakeshore paths, there are hiking trails all through the mountains. A guide is helpful in this case simply to know where you are going. For example we have a beautiful series of waterfalls up the Pumpatin Canyon, but a casual visitor would not know where to find the trails.

If you stay out of the water! Be cautious about swimming.
