Custom leather jackets

Hi,

I'm going to be in Fes for the next 5 days (until 20th July) and I'm wanting to find a good quality place to get a leather jacket made to fit. Nothing too fancy or different to what you currently can find in the medinas, but made to fit instead of just off the rack. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to go? Also, a general price range would be helpful also.

Thanks so much!

To find the garment you seek you will need to find a tailor who will make up a made-to-measure leather jacket, I did not notice any "Tailleur" shops on my Fes el Bali walkabouts this year, but either ask the hotel manager at your accommodation for a contact or just walk along the Talaa Kebira, the main street in Fes el Bali medina, or the almost parallel Talaa Seghira to find the leather shops, undoubtedly, these will be able to suggest a local tailor.

I've done this in Essaouira some years ago, you have to agree a price in advance with the craftsman and leave a cash deposit to enable him to source and buy the quality leather you want, it might then take several days after he has taken your body measurements to produce the final garment.

The price you pay really depends on your negotiating skills, but expect to pay around 900 dirhams as a guide price, quality does not come cheap, especially when made to measure.

There is a local handcrafts facility on the Talaa Kebira, it's an old converted Fondouk (travellers' inn) which specialises in all sorts of leather goods, and other items, some pictures below for recognition......

Even if you can't find a tailor there, the merchants should be able to furnish you with a suitable contact.

Many thanks for this information. Do you believe it is better to try a leather shop on the Talaa Kbira/Sghira or at one of the multiple leather shops near the tannery? Obviously it is maybe more likely to be harassed or pressured at the shops near the tannery, but I would be interested to hear your thoughts on which location would be better? Thanks so much.

Do a trial run on both the Talaas then the Chouara tanneries, there is a leather handcrafts shop beside the tannery entrance but from what I could see it only had handbags, belts etc, small souvenir items, and the shop on the other side of the street was a weaver's workshop complete with ancient, but working loom, interesting if you have not seen one before, but I don't think you will find a bespoke leather jacket there, what you need to find is an actual tailor, look for a "tailleur" sign in the Talaas, these are the main commercial streets. If you don't speak French, tailor is pronounced "te-yer", although English is widely spoken in Fes, there are times when French can be more useful.

It's important to approach a tailor alone, if you are accompanied by a guide or "friend" you will pay much more for the garment when the guide demands his commission from the craftsman, you won't actually see money changing hands, this happens after you are long gone!

I still think you could save time and energy by asking your hotel manager for a recommended tailor, after all he or she lives in the medina and will have contacts there.

Lol, shimmin2robertson. I hadn't noticed that.

What a pity so few people have seen fit to report the post nonetheless.
