One night and tour in wine country?

My husband and I haven't been away without the kids for 8 years and we are going to nip away for one night when the family is in Cape Town. We are reasonably serious about wine, but realistically have only a day to visit wineries and spend the night.

What should we do for our day and night? Where should we stay with absolutely amazing food and beautiful scenery? Private tour or wine tram? What not to be missed and really special?

Hi guys,

Congrats on choosing the winelands for your first night away from the kids--it's amazing and very romantic. We love the Franschhoek County House--we are repeat customers. It's located in an old perfumerie. The location is great, the grounds are lovely and the service is impeccable. Monneaux restaurant there on the grounds is wonderful. An amazing buffet breakfast is included daily. The rooms/suites are spacious--some with fireplaces. They have an outdoor pool--thought it was a bit chilly last time we were there.

I would recommend the Wine Tram since you are there for only one day. Alternatively, you could drive on your own or ride horseback to some of them. Don't forget to spend some time in town at the shops, the Huguenot museum and the Car museum --so much to do!!! Check out some previous posts for numerous restaurant recommendations. Nearby Stellenbosch is worth a short drive if you have time. I guarantee you will be back.

Thank you, Barbara, that's very helpful and sounds lovely!

The Country House looks stunning -- and it is also probably a bit out of our price range at $500 / night since we are also paying for a full house in Cape Town that week (and a month long holiday). Is there anything in the $200 / night range you could suggest?

Thank you very much!

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are both beautiful wine regions to visit. Amazing mountain backgrounds, beautiful grounds at many of the wineries, and lots of good wines. Like Napa or Sonoma, it can be overwhelming to decide which to visit. I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions, but here are a few of mine (cut/paste of some recommendations I offered to a similar question a few months back.)

And on an unrelated note: Is that the Carrizo Plain in your profile picture?

.......................................

There are hundreds of wineries in the area you're going to, and everyone has their own favorites. With that disclaimer, here were some of my favorites from past visits:

-Right next to you is Delaire Graff; it was one of the most beautiful wineries/facilities I've ever visited. Built by a diamond baron, the grounds, buildings, and views are spectacular. (http://www.delaire.co.za/).

-Another beautiful facility is at La Motte . (https://www.la-motte.com/)

-We had a wonderful outdoor lunch and enjoyed the wines at La Petit Ferme. (http://www.lapetiteferme.co.za/)

- Kanonkop, (http://www.kanonkop.co.za/)

-Kleine Zalze, (http://www.kleinezalze.co.za/)

-Mulderbosch (http://www.mulderbosch.com/)

....etc, etc. You have your work cut out for you. Have a great trip!

Thank you so much, Jeff, I really appreciate it!

Are most of these available on the Tram, or is that only just a few of them? We certainly want to visit those highlights and I am grateful for your answer.

The photo is from Las Coloradas in the Yucatan -- it is a salt lake and totally pink!
