where to go ?

We have never been to Mauritius before. We like beach, some resaurants ( on beach would be perfect ) some shops. Not huge hotel, but mid range with nice beach, not busy, party scene. Love to ride scooters if not to busy, prefer away from big crowds. Any suggestions would be welcome

Hi Linda

Are you looking at restaurants outside of the hotel that you would be staying at? Or do you want a hotel with a choice of restaurant options? If the former, then you'll need to look the north around Grand Baie or the west at Flic en Flac. These are the two areas which cater best for tourists with shops, restaurants and bars. Most visitors staying at hotels tend to go either half board or all inclusive so would mainly eat at the hotel or just have lunch out of the resort. There are very few hotels within walking distance of restaurants so you'd need to either have a car or taxi available. Although we've used scooters on some of our trips we only use them during the day and only in the area close to our hotel as the driving can be a bit "interesting"! Mauritius isn't like Thailand where there's a culture of going out to eat in the evenings.

The south and east coasts have very little outside of the hotels so probably not what you are looking for although the beaches in the east are the nicest followed closely by the beach in the west near Flic en Flac. Weather is also an issue on the east and south coasts as they trade winds make the winter months a bit cooler so avoid from June to September.

The hotels in Mauritius are generally pretty laid back with entertainment on site until about 11pm. It's not a party island at all.

For a start you can look at the following hotels in the north - Merville Beach, Beachcomber Canonnier, Beachcomber Mauricia and and Veranda Grand Baie. Beaches at first two are better than last two which are within walking distance to restaurants etc.

On west coast none of the hotels are within walking distance to restaurants but a quick taxi ride away. Look at The Sands, La Pirogue, Sugar Beach and the Hilton for starters.

We've just returned from Beachcomber Victoria which is north west half way between Grand Baie and Port Louis - lovely resort with a good beach and close to a marine reserve so good snorkeling.

Let us know if you have further questions as you continue your research and we'll try to help you.

I know how daunting it can be when researching an unknown destination but I'm sure whichever hotel you choose you'll have a wonderful time! YouTube is also a fantastic source of information as you can can a better feel of a hotel or area from a video than you can from photos.
