Thanks Monica

that is great as we are looking at going to KS next year and with a good price sale fare that could work out well :-)

not having been in that neck of the woods yet (Surat Thani airport) is it far to get to the ferry to get to KS?

thanks for the heads up

cheers

Mossy :-)

Well as you probably know Firefly and Berjaya fly from Subang to Koh Samui, but Air Asia ( as you know :) ) have great deals. Someone mentioned they just got 2 return tickets for US / AUD 40 !

They are promoting in the RM 79 ( B 800 range )

Lomprayah do about B 550 transfer from Surat Thani Airport that include road and then ferry over to Koh Samui so it is quite easy. That can be booked online.

I still have deep fond memories of the old what I call chug-chug ferries from Don Sak which is further away over to Samui, ( that takes me back about 24 years first time ) they plod along but have what I can a more oldy-world 'charm' about them. Sure takes longer but it helps to make the trip more of a memory.

So whether fast ferry or the Don Sak it is quite easy.

Lomprayah have high speed ferries ( at the moment Air Asia would arrive Surat Thani 1150, Lomprayah leaves 1330 arrives onto Samui 1615, return works ok too )

On that side of the coast the great thing also ( apart from Koh Samui ) is that you have the dual highway + railway line up and down, so getting to different places is easy, + ferries between Koh Samui, Phangan and Tao.

For anyone wanting to trip around you can Koh Samui + Phangan + Tao and then ferry to Chumphon, from there it is about 1 hr 30 by road to Surat Thani Airport.

Lomprayah routes:

The Don Sak to Koh Samui ferry:

This is a fast version:

Down the mainland coast from Surat Thani is Khanom, although some resort hotels it is very very quiet indeed

The Racha Kiri Khanom:

Because Koh Samui / Phangan / Tao are so famous many of these coastal spots get rarely mentioned, I guess in a way like Khao Lak years ago was over-shadowed by Phuket, and although most head straight to Samui there are some great places both south and north of Surat Thani, and again, the fast dual highways + train line makes getting around easy.

But these are 'well quiet' areas but may be of interest to some.

Thanks for the info Monica.

Mossy, it doesn't work from Perth. The flight from KL to Surat Thani departs pretty much the same time as the Air Asia flight from Perth lands at KL.

If you already have to overnight in KL, I would go with Fireflyz from Szubang to Koh Samui direct and save the ferry time from Surat Thani to Samui.

hmmm! looked at those times FP and would have to do a night or two in KL before flying out to Samui....seems like a bit of messing around for us to go via Surat Thani, but a good service to have all the same

we will maybe stick to going via Singapore or going to Phuket first direct then onto Samui

SilkAir have a morning flights SIN-Samui and Bangkok Airways have an evening flight, they both code-share.

The morning Silkair handy for those arriving from your way on the early morning arrivals.
