Hi LuciaSydney :)
We stayed in the Villa 11 which has its own private beach with great snorkeling- which is what we did.
However, we did see many people also going straight from having breakfast at the beach front restaurant to walking into the water to snorkel.
The resorts boat also takes you to its private island which is a short 10 min ride away, where we snorkeled, had lunch and then kicked back with a glass of champagne :)
Hope this helps :)
Hi, yes there is great snorkelling off the beach at Eratap. We stayed there a couple of years ago. Best done at highish tides. The snorkelling off the private island was even better!
Island Magic Resort is opposite hideaway Island. It is a small resort with about 16 self catering bungalows and has great coral out the front of the resort as well as a very good restaurant. I think the coral is better than Hideway but probably not as many fish. Hideway is also more sheltered from the trade winds. Eratap is a beautiful spot but is a long way fom Vila and th road at the moment is very rough.
There are actually a fair few places you can snorkel straight off the beach. Around eratap is IMO the best and its where the cruise ship tours take snorkel groups.
Iririki Island has Snorklers cove which is pretty darn good and the resort is right "in" town so easy to get to the other attractions and eateries.
Erakor island has some nice easy snorkling.
Have a look at Paradise cove over on the Pango side. We haven't stayed there however snorkelled there a couple of years ago and it was fantastic. The resort has some great reviews on TA.
We are off to Octopus resort in a few weeks and I'll see how they compare.
Have fun deciding and try to get to Tanna one day it's outstanding.
Hi Lucia, What did you end up deciding on? We're looking into a trip to Vanuatu with our 2 young kids and looking for a great house reef for them to snorkel easily without big daytrips! I'd love any advice you can send my way on places to stay that are kid & snorkel friendly! :)
Depending what you are comparing it too (it’s not the same as the outer Great Barrier Reef) we found the snorkeling quite good af Erakor and Iririki. Erakor you need to swim out a bit further for the good stuff but we saw plenty of different fish. Hideaway island was also very good - we did a day trip here, and probably the best off the beach snorkeling we did was from Gideon’s Landing. We also snorkelled off the beach on Lelepa island and the snorkeling off the boat on the Lelepa trip was by far the best we did the whole trip.
