Working as a Teacher in Shenzhen

Hey All. I recently got a job offer to work in Shenzhen. Accommodation is provided. My questions are: How expensive is food there? and what do most people use as the Go-To transport?

Thanks in advance

Food can be pretty inexpensive if you go local. Most people take the subway.

Shenzhen will be one of the more expensive cities in China for an Expat because there are so many choices of restaurants, bars etc. You would need to be careful that you are getting a decent salary for a fixed maximum number of hours e.g. 20,000 for 15-20 hr p wk.

Presumably your accommodation will be on campus if you are at a regular school or university. A different scenario if you are working for a language mill (night & weekend classes etc).

Speaking from experience, DO NOT go there on a tourist visa on the promise of getting your work visa once you've started working.

A. You will be working illegally from day 1, at great risk to yourself, and

B. The rules became a lot stricter at the beginning of November last year, ie you will need a full degree minimum in order to obtain your work visa.

Although the opportunity might seem too good to pass up, I would strongly recommend not taking up a job offer unless they sort out the proper work visa BEFORE you travel.

Shenzhen have many district and difference price.

For example,If you live in Futian district, most of price is CNY 5-10 get a breakfast

Lunch almost CNY15-30 (Chicken rice set meal)

Most of people take the subway or bus.

Subway have rush hours(7:30-8:30) and (18:00-19:00) is crowded.

Shenzhen prices vary depending on district and if you live like a local or an expat.

Start up costs are the biggest hurdle. Here's our blog post of mow much it cost us.

Regards transport, most people buy a card called shenzhen tong that you can top up and use for metro and buses.

We run a website that has some shenzhen specific teaching materials if you are interested.
