Opening a bank account as foreigner

Anyone recently opened a bank account in China? I am currently working in HK and has a 10 year L Visa in my passport. I heard it is getting a lot stricter these days, requiring tax proof and Chinese address. Would be extremely helpful if I can prepare these in advance!

I did it myself six months ago. No success in Shenzhen as all banks I tried required proof of residence in China. On the other hand, I managed to open my bank account at a BOCOM branch in Zhuhai with passport and hotel address. Chinese mobile phone number is essential. It's getting stricter recently, though.

that;s great to know! Zhuhai is still easily accessible from HK. Any chance you can recall which branch was it?

Try Shenzhen ICBC and/or CMB with your HKID, it might work. As said, a Chinese phone number is essential. Find also a friend with a Chinese address you can 'borrow'.

Thanks! I got HKID and Chinese phone number already. I imagine any address would do? Not necessary in Zhuhai?

I helped a foreign guest opened a Chinese Bank account few weeks ago. To open a bank account, the bank need to see work certificate ,Passport and proof of residence.

hk id's are not recognized anywhere on the mainland. real hongers use tongxingzhengs. regardless, hongers/taiwanese will be treated the same as foreigners in banks and have been restricted. i ran up on several banks. most of them required proof of local employment. some of them, 20-30% flat out dont take foreigners regardless of what documents they brought.

Every account I have opened in China has required passport & work visa. I don't recall having to show proof of address or residence certificate.
