Jaisalmer or Rann of Kutch

We have 1 week holiday coming up in last week of Oct. We want to visit a desert this time - have heard great things both about dunes of Jaisalmer as well as white desert of Rann of Kutch (if we go to Jaisalmer, we will split one week with Udaipur and if we go to Rann/Bhuj, we will split with Ahemdabad). We will be traveling with our 5 year old son, so we want to choose a place that is more scenic and has better stay options. Can the members who have been to both Jaisalmer and Rann recommend which one would be a better option?

Thanks.
