Travel from Surat Thani to Pedang Besar

My son and I are travelling from Thailand to Malaysia. We are trying to book travel from Surat Thani to Pedang Besar so we can catch the train to Butterworth/Penang. None of the websites are current and all tell us there is a train that goes through but we cannot find fact.

What is the best way to travel from Surat Thani to the border? Any comments would be appreciated.

Thank you for your comment however this train has now been cancelled as of earlier this year. Unfortunately not all information on the internet is updated accordingly hence our frustration finding travel options. We are travelling through Thailand now and can confirm the train is not operating however the language barrier makes it difficult to find alternative transportation.

The Bangkok-Padang Besar sleepers previously running in trains 35/36 now run as train 45/46

The train you need is number 45.

You can book here

You need to set up an account.

It's not clear where you are now but if there is no schedule online, the easiest way to do it is just to go to the train station and state the destination, then they'll tell you the time. If it's a while off, you can go and do something to fill the time.

If you wanted to break your journey you could also stop off in Hatyai for a night and get an airconditioned minivan next day from near the Clocktower in Phetkhasem Road which costs about 55 baht and takes about an hour. Red Planet in Hatyai, ( formerly Tune Hotel ) is a popular budget place to stay, and there is a nice small cafe in the alleyway opposite ( Chirraphat Alley) where the owner ( a man called Sak ) and his wife make very good and cheap Isan food. The cafe has no name in English but most items on the menu are 40 baht. It is called Rahn Kuan Khao.

Also in the next street called Niphatuthit 3 there is another restaurant with no English name selling very good Dimsum from little bowls which are put in bamboo steamer baskets. You pick your food from the glass cabinet outside and go and sit down. They are brought to your table a few minutes later. One basket costs 15 baht and about four baskets makes a meal. If you want western food there is The Swan restaurant and Post Laser which also has a good live band from 9pm each night.
