Getting to Surat Thani from Butterworth/Penang...

We are planning on making our way from Butterworth/Penang to Surat Thani via train or bus to then take the ferry to Koh Samui. The only train I can find leaves Butterworth at 2.20pm and gets in at Surat Thani at midnight (too late for any ferries!) so we would have to stay the night in Surat Thani! is there any other way to do this trip and get to Surat Thani in time to catch a ferry to Koh Samui? or does anyone know a hotel in Surat Thani that we could use if we have to stay the night there? Thanks

We did this journey last year and stayed over night in Surat Thani. The train actually arrived a couple of hours late, but in fine Thai style there was a tuk tuk driver awaiting the arrival of the train and were soon whisked off to our hotel. I won't recommend this particular hotel though as it was out of town and not really convenient for catching the bus to take us to the ferry next morning, but it all worked very well in the end. The best thing is to stay in the centre of town and then grab a tuk tuk the next morning to the Lomrprayah office, which is next to a petrol station, the tuk tuk/taxi drivers know it.

The only other way would be to get a mini bus from Penang to Surat Thani, but I personally prefer the train, much more comfortable. Be aware though that the train leaving Butterworth doesn't have a buffet car attached, so you need to take water and food until the time you reach Hat Yai which is when a buffet car gets attached and you get a meal (you have to pay for this).

The other option would be to get off at Hat Yai at the more reasonable time and check into a place there for the night and then continue onward by either minibus, air con bus or get the early morning train next day from Hat Yai at 6.40am which arrives in Surat Thani at 13.22 (or thereabouts), but then you wouldn't be able to get the Lomprayah Ferry as their last ferry is around 2pm, but there are plenty of other ferries running right up until 7pm from Don Sak port which is 1 1/2 hours from Surat Thani city.
