I don't know about Argentinean pesos but dollars are accepted and you're likely to get a much better exchange rates than with AR$.

All the stores in Colonia are used to day tripers, so they not only accept all currencies, they also give you the exchange in that money you paid in. Only the museums need to be paid in uruguayan 50, that is about 2,50 USD. Also more and more restaurants are accepting credit cards now, because of the diffulties argentinean visitors have to get foreign money. I hope this helps. Good trip!

Note that in Uruguay now there is LEYxxxxx for paying with non-uruguayan plastic cards. Give you small/medium rebate on hotels, car rent and some restaurants. Yesterday got 18% off a perfectly good meal in a fancy restaurant. Worth asking and checking out.

FYI, the law applies only to certain purchases and it is not a discount--they just won't charge you for the VAT, or if they do, it'll be reimbursed later on. If you want to read more about it check this other thread:

I have read mixed reviews regarding Colonia. Is it worth a day trip? How long should we stay there, before taking a ferry back to BA?

OntheroadLaurie,

This is a thread about currency, not about visiting Colonia. It'll help to keep the conversation going if you would just open a new thread for yourself to ask your question. To do that, click on the Ask a Question button. Thanks
