Kanazawa, Shirakawago and Takayama

We are planning to:

DAY 1 : depart Osaka in the morning (say mid morning after breakfast around 930am) for Kanazawa (stay 1 night in Kanazawa)

- does anyone know how long will the JR train journey be so that we can maximise the daytime in Kanazawa (also bearing in mind that we are a travelling group of 2A and 2C)

DAY 2 : depart Kanazawa for Takayama (stay 1 night in Takayama)

- was wondering if we can make the morning bus tour to Shirakawago (8am) I somehow don't think this is possible (unsure what the travel time for the JR train is from Kanazawa to Takayama)

- I would assume it would be better to take the afternoon bus tour to Shirakawago (1pm) - is this still possible ?

- After the tour to Shirakawago, spend the evening at Takayama

DAY 3 : next day morning at Takayama before leaving for Kyoto (in the afternoon)

Was intending to use the JR pass to save time going from Takayama to Nagoya to Kyoto rather than tracking back.

Day 1 : JR Limited Express "Thunderbird" from Osaka to Kanazawa.

Day 2: Nohi bus from Kanazawa to Takayama via Shirakawago.

You should take the Nohi bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawago, explore the World Heritage village while leaving your luggage at the bus center there, and take the next bus to Takayama. There is no train from Kanazawa to Shirakawago.

Day 3: JR Limited Express "Wide View Hida" from Takayama to Nagoya, followed by Shinkansen.

It is definitely worth it to stop by at Shirakawago. Very doable on a day trip via the Nohi bus if you leave Kanazawa by the morning bus. We did it when we went with kids. In our group of 10, the youngest was 6 and oldest was pass 70. So it is definitely doable with kids.

In Kanazawa, you can move around on the loop bus. If you pay for a day pass, it is a hop on hop off bus. We used it to visit kemrouken and higashi Chaya and onmicho market.

Half a day in Kanazawa seems a bit short. Consider taking the evening train to Kanazawa. Get a bento and have dinner on the train. Saves time and is also an experience for the kids. This way, you will have a full day to explore Kanazawa. The kids with us enjoyed our bento dinners on the trains. It was fun and they get to select what they wanted from all the beautiful bentos at the supermarkets.
