http://publicholidays.com.my/thaipusam/ & www.onestopmalaysia.com/holidays-2013.html

The above links list the public holiday for Thaipusam as 27/01/2013, so based on the 2012 festivities it would appear the three days will be from around 26/01/2013 to 28/01/2013.

There's nothing listed (yet) on the http://www.visitpenang.gov.my/ - looks like they're only just starting to list events for 2013.

Hotels around Gurney Drive would be fine as it is about 1km from Waterfall temple. Staying at at Waterfall might be a pain for you as there is a road block along the road to Waterfall during Thaipusam.

A few choices like Berjaya Georgetown Hotel, Evergreen, G Hotel, Northam Hotel.

To see the coconut breaking cememony for Silver Chariot on 26 Jan, best location is the Jalan Dato Keramat facing KOMTAR.

On Thaipusam, all Kavadis will go through the main road along to waterfall, known as Jalan Utama and Jalan Kebun Bunga.

One of the best spots to view the passing devotees is at the corner of Jalan Kebun Bunga and Jalan Gottlieb. Morning is better than the heat of the afternoon.

For accommodation, there is the Waterfall Hotel on the corner of Jalan Kebun Bunga and Jalan Gottlieb or the Berjaya Hotel in Pulau Tikus on Burma rd about 1 klm walk distance.

What time do the festivities start? I have friends arriving from airport in the morning. I'm afraid they are going to get held up by traffic.
