Food allergies

Hi, were hoping to visit Borneo April 2010 for a 2 week tour around. My son, age 12, has a peanut and a seafood allergy and i was wondering if anyone has any experience of travellers with food allergies and how they are handled by the restaurants and hotels in Borneo. We really want to visit Borneo but not at the expense of his health. will be grateful for any advice.

Thanks Maxine

1. Re: Food allergies

You have a BIG problem.

Many Malay (Malay, Chinese and Indian) use groundnut (peanut) oil as a frying medium.

Add to that the ground peanuts are a common addition to dishes, you need to be very careful.

AND, to make matters worse - prawn paste is also a common additive to dishes.

Please PM me, I will (given time) provide you with a list of foods (dishes) that, normally, do not contain the 'bad guys' - BUT, even then you need to double check.

p.s. I am a retired chef and Malaysian foodie - just ask the 'rat pack' on here.
