You need to be more specific. Is that Yamanaka-cho in Yamashina? How far is it from the station?

Yamashina is not an ideal place to base yourself, but not the worst either. The south side of the station is much better as it has so many more restaurants and shops vs north side.

I have the JR pass so it's kind of good being close to a JR station, how far in from the south side where is the better side that you said ?

Yamashin is a new housing area of Kyoto. Town is located only south of station. North side of JR is Mt. Jyumonji.

I used to visit a company for business in Yamashina often and Ohishi Shrine for my pleasure. JR Yamashina station is just one stop from Kyoto station. If you like to short cut to Kyoto downtown, take Kyoto Subway. Either way is fine for you. Do not take Keihan Rail connected to subway: you will need to pay double.

In yamashina, there are some beautiful spot: kashuji Temple is the good spot to see cherry blossoms in April.
