Ferry from Belem to Manaus

Hello forum! Planning to be in Belem around July 1st, 2014. Wondering how the boat/ferry system works if we want to get from Belem to Manaus:

1) Do you have to book the boat/ferry in advance?

2) What are the reliable companies that provide this service?

3) How long does it usually take? (we want to dedicate about 5 days to this)

4) Is it easier to get from Belem to Manaus or the other way around - Manaus to Belem.

Any info will help. Thanks guys!!!

Yup. It's awesome. You don't need to book in advance. Tips: take a deck of cards (or something to help pass time), and don't stay in Belem for too long (there's nothing to do there). It took us 6 days to get there.

How did you find a boat? Did you just go to Belem and find it there or did you have an idea of the one to take?

Do you have details of the boat you took, the price, and would you recommend?

Thanks

There is a main ferry dock. Once you get to that ferry dock, it's pretty easy to figure it out. We stayed in a room (as opposed to a hammock), and it was about $300 for the whole thing. The rooms are tiny, but they are MUCH nicer than staying on a hammock. The hammock area is packed with people, but it is cheaper of course. If you are going to stay in a hammock, get there EARLY to reserve a good hammock spot.

Overall, it was a cool experience. You are completely off the grid. No internet, no service, etc. It's you and the Amazon river. You also see some pretty cool things along the way - tiny villages, local people. It's very interesting. If you are patient, and open-minded, I definitely recommend it!
