Waiting area

Hi there, I am going to Lagos this weekend for the first time... My friend arrives an hour after me and i have to wait for them. Is there anywhere safe to do this as i dont want to leave the airport.

dont leave the airport if waiting for another flight and dont leave the airport with anyone apart from your pre arranged transport. In reality all the flights seem to end up arriving more or less together and you get snarled up in the passport/baggage collection. The baggage hall is the last part of the airport before you leave the secure area and if your bags come through before your friend arrives (dont laugh, this is often a 'miracle' !) just loiter in this area. Collect your luggage yourself as the trolleys come with a man who wants money and cant really leave the baggage hall anyway. The customs men are by the door of the hall and will want to see luggage tabs and occasionally the inside of your bags, smile and comply and feign ignorance of any rumours you have heard of 'tipping/dash/bribery' - you can get away with this if you are a foreigner (oyibo) and it is actually illegal. After this door is a small area where some drivers/escorts are allowed to wait then you have to 'scrum' through a supposed secure area to the gate and taxi/car park. Again i reiterate that if it is your first time here please make arrangements to be met and make sure that the person that 'meets' you is the genuine one!

most of the flights arrive and hook up to the airport arms - when you walk through here there is the usual corridor with seating but you are not usually allowed to linger here and there are usually army/security types here. You are best off sitting in your seat in the plane and allowing the ones who want to get off as soon as landed do their thing anyway if you are not in a rush. Then walk down to passport control which can be an experience in itself :) I have done the separate flights thing before and even though these were supposed to be an hour apart we ended up in the baggage scrum at the same time as their bags actually came through first! It doesnt seem unusual for people to linger here either as the airport people know its the last spot before your pickup, so you may just be waiting there until you know your 'person' is definitely at the door. Has your friend been before, in which case they may have other suggestions?
