Of course it is easy to go around Hangzhou or Tongli on your own. I guess it is the same for Suzhou coz I have yet to do DIY there but if you search in TA you will have all the information you need.

Not sure where exactly you want to go in Hangzhou but pls PM, I might have some information that you need. As for Tongli, check my trip report: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g297442-i10446-k3271976-Trip_Report_Tongli_during_mid_Nov_09-Suzhou_Jiangsu.html

No flash,no phto taking or videotaping allowed at Shanghai Circus World. However on my last visit there i had seen some tourists not from mainland stubbornly snapping some photos during the show. Its fairly easy to navigate yrself at Suzhou/Hangzhou n Tongli as long as u have the places u want to go written in mandarin. The main areas of attractions r not actually ver far apart.,n all cab drivers know them too.

thanks all for your replies.

i am probably going to do suzhou and tongli in a day.

suzhou (taking 8 or 9am train from shanghai) - will only do the admin garden

tongli (taking cab from suzhou)- will try to squeeze in all as your suggestion.

is tongli nicely lighted in the night? worth staying late (maybe 8pm) for some photography, before i rush back to shanghai?

hangzhou, will wander on the street parallel to the train line and around the lake with lunch at the restaurant by the lake. i got at least 5 or 6 hours here.

anything else that is a must see or must eat there?

Qinghefang Street, one of the most famous historic streets in Hangzhou, reflects features of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). Most preserved buildings are from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Strolling on this street, you will be attracted by the antique buildings and local crafts, such as silk parasols, brocades, noted Zhang Xiaoquan scissors and Hangzhou fans.
