Renting a car or not for first trip to CR

We are flying in and out of Liberia and staying for 5 nights at the Hilton Papagayo for our first trip to Costa Rica, with our two children, ages 11 and 13. We would like to see some interesting wildlife, especially mammals, and do a little jungle sightseeing, along with relax on the beach and next to the pool. Is it better to rent a car for the entire week or to arrange for some tours on a couple of the days?

Which would you LIKE to do?

If you rent a car, you will have a lot of freedom and flexibility to come and go on your own.

If you don't rent a car, you can go with organized tours.

Some people like it the first way...... some people like it the second way.

You don't really have to have it all one way. You could just rent a car for a couple of days and then do organized tours the other times.

Be careful and do some research if you choose to rent a car in CR. We got ripped off pretty badly as have many others, its really a crooked industry there. Especially avoid thrifty. If your hotel is nice enough I'd be more inclined to get there somehow then do a few excursions.

I would not declare renting a car "an industry" and for sure it is not all crooked. There are many good and honest rental car companies with more then good customer service. Not being clear about mandatory insurance fee is much different then charging non-existing damages post return. Avoiding "middle man" and those of the most badly reviewed will assure you to have a fairly positive experience.
