Is 5 days too much?

Hey all,

My fiance and I are going to be spending 11 full days in costa rica in august. Looking for an adventurous/relaxing trip combo. We aren't terribly fond of the idea of spending most of our days just lying on the beach although do want some relaxation of course.

We're spending 3.5 days in la fortuna, rafting down the pacuare for 1 day, and then5 days split between puerto viejo and cahuita, then spending our last night in alajuela before we fly out of SJ. Just wondering if 5 days split between PV and cahuita is too much? I'm worried there may not be enough to do in the area? I feel like this is a silly problem too be worried about but, any thoughts would be great! Suggestions for the area would also be much appreciated. :)

Thanks so much!

There surely are enough attractions to keep you busy and off the beach for 5 days. Yours is a very well planned itinerary, go for it!

Plenty to do in 5-days in PV. We'll be there for 19-days in July/August and still won't be ready to leave.

There is so much to do you wouldn't be able to do that in double the time so no worries. We have repeat guests who have been several times for one week or longer and still find new things to do or explore.

There is the National Park in Cahuita which kept us busy for the day. We walked the whole trail and back (almost 10 km) very slowly trying to spot as much wildlife as possible and we saw so many animals and birds. We went swimming as well as some of the beaches are great for that. In Cahuita there is also the Tree of Life wildlife rescue center.

South of Puerto Viejo you can rent a bike and bike to Manzanillo. We stayed in Manzanillo. There is a wildlife refuge there and you can hike far but if you do you might want to take a guide as the trail was harder to follow than in Cahuita. You can visit an indigenous village. You can take a boat trip. We just enjoyed walking and spotting wildlife. We walked from Manzanillo to Punta Uva and saw monkeys, sloths, toucans...

You say you want some relaxation as well. But you could add Tortuguero if you don't mind a more rushed trip. Day 1: get to Tortuguero, day 2: Tortuguero, day 3: scenic boat ride to Moin, taxi/bus to Limon and bus to Cahuita, day 4: Cahuita, day 5: short bus ride to Puerto Viejo or a beach south of PV, day 6-7: PV area, day 8: rafting and drop-off in La Fortuna, day 9-10-11: La Fortuna.
