Active group. Looking for some recommendations...

Our extended family (13 adults, no kids this time!)is headed to MA in a couple of weeks. We are staying just outside Quepos. We all love a great adventure and are in physical condition. We will be there for 7 days. Can anyone recommend some great activities that are a must. So far we are interested in the zipline, deep sea fishing, white water rafting (any recommendations?) and Hiking (need some recommendations here too!).

Thanks!

You are in the right area for deep sea fishing so if you have anyone interested in that then go for it. Quepos has many fishermen who spend part of the year there are live there year round. many frequent El Gran Escape restaurant, which is a good place for seafood. It is always fresh and if you catch somethign when you fish, they will prepare it for you.

For hiking you can of course do small trails, nothing heavy duty in the national Park. Manuel Antonio Park is a sure place to see wildlife. You can not go in there and not see animals. There are 4 species of monkeys in this area including the endangered mono tit. You can hire a guide if you want but make sure you hike alittle on your own there too because the guides only stay in the main area of the park. There are a couple of trails that are not heavy hiking. You can get to a couple of beaches where there are no people and you can hike to Mirador del Pacifico for a breathaking view over the ocean. The 2nd beach within the park is the best place in the area to swim.

You can also spend a day at the public beach just outside of the park. There is a restaurant on the beach about half way down that is a great place to sit for lunch. You can rent chairs and boogie boards in that area of the beach too. People will bring you drinks on the beach but you can save money and just walk up to the restaurant and get them on you own.

Another good hiking place is The Rainmaker, which is a private rainforest preserve. There are suspinion bridges in the canopy that are the longest in the country so you can't be terrified of heights. The guides are very knowledgeable. Lorenzo grew up in an indiginous family in the mountains so he knows his stuff. At the end you get to swim at a little water fall that is the 3rd purist water tested in the world.

Thank you. That gives us a great start. Very informative. What about white water rafting? Any suggestions there? Do they have large rapids or is it pretty tame?

Rafting in that area is a kind of slow...and small rapids...Savegre river and Naranjo...offer some class IV rapids (during rainy season)...small, short and norrow...the dropp from the hills is fast into the lowlands...for that reason...rapids are not to long...and again is a kind of slow at the middle and the end!!

But still nice day of wet and wild fun!!

Thanks Luis. We will be there Sept 2-9. That is pretty close to the rainy season right? Which river of the two mentioned would you recommend?

If you're game, there's awesome mountain biking to be had in the area. It's been two years since I've had contact, but there used to be a company called Estrella Tours based in Quepos that is affiliated with the local mountain biking team. They know the area and can arrange basic to advanced trips in the surrounding hills like nobody's business.

Maybe one of the TA Experts in the area knows if they are still around or has contact info on them, but if not, track down the guys that were behind it and find out who the go-to company is now.
