Day trip from Playa Hermosa, Puntarenas to Monteverde

We are renting a car during our stay and were wondering how long the drive would be from Playa Hermosa, Puntarenas to Monteverde cloud forest reserve.

Is this a day trip sort of thing? We're ok with a really long day if that's what it takes. Unfortunately we have reservations at the same hotel our entire stay....

Thanks for the help!

Playa Hermosa (Punta) to Monteverde is about a bit over 3 hours each way. It is not recommended that you drive after dark. It gets dark before 6 PM.

You really won't have much time at all to enjoy Monteverde.

Actually I live in Monteverde and disagree. If you leave as you stated for a day trip you can drive up say leaving Hermosa at 8:00AM. (gotta sleep in a bit no?)

You should arrive (enjoying our newly paved and smoothed out roads up here) by about 10:30AM. (If you stop to see the crocs at rio tarcoles add a half hour.)

Ok then do one of our world famous and not bogus canopy tours like you will have down on the coast.

You can do Extremos at 11:00Am or Aventura at 11:00 am and then catch a beer at bar amigos after or hit the reserve for a quick tour and leave here late afternoon and catch some waves at Hermosa by 8.00Pm.

What a day no? Don´t miss Monteverde.

It is better to stay here 2 nights but if you can´t come up for the day. But don´t complain about the roads. Enjoy them instead.

If you are willing to drive...go to Arenal...a lot more fun than Monteverde...a lot more to do...

First, it is a bit longer than two-plus hours from Hermosa to MV -- more like three hours. I did it recently. So, I agree with Raquel that such a trip doesn't leave you much time to enjoy MV.

Second, as for going to Arenal rather than MV, that is a matter of taste. The writer who prefers Arenal says to go there because there is more to do; not so at all. Perhaps there is more to do of the type of activity he enjoys, though. Plus, the drive to Arenal is at least as long, maybe longer, from Hermosa.

Why not go to Manuel Antonio or Carrara park? We just go back and absolutely loved Carrara. We hired Freddy Villareal, a tremendous nature loving, English speaking guide. He will take you out outside the park also, if you want. We saw monkeys, morphos, snakes, tons of scarlet macaws, toucans, lots of birds, those large rats, poisonous dart frogs in Carrara. That forest is beautiful. We also took a great boat tour on the Tarcoles, one that did not feed the crocs.

My advise is to stay local. There is so much to see in that area. Villa Lapas has a suspension bridge walk that is supposed to be very similar to Montverde.

Let me know if you want Freddys phone number.

I would recommend Carara and/or a Tarcoles boat tour. We did both and would recommend either. Guides are $25/pp at the Carara entrance and so was Jungle Crocodile Safari--it really helps that you have your own car, btw. The last afternoon boat tour also gets you views of the Pacific sunset (in addition to monster crocs and 30-40 species of birds in one afternoon).
