Fountain Hills

Hi,Folks.

We have booked a small condo for the month of January,'08. We are interested in hiking, golfing and enjoying the scenery. We have been to the Superstitions and love hiking there. What else should we look for? We like modest restaurants and modestly priced golf courses. Thanks for any help. (We love Arizona!!)

Hi! There are incredible hiking trails just north of Fountain Hills in McDowell Mountain Park. Just take Fountain Hills Blvd north towards Rio Verde about 4 miles. The desert vistas, mountain views, and scenery are spectacular, with your choice of length and difficulty of the trails. The ranger can give you a trail map of the area with descriptions. Also, Saguaro Lake area has stunning views and many amazing hiking trails. If you travel north several miles on Beeline Hwy from Fountain Hills, you will turn right (east) on Bush Hwy for a short distance and follow the signs. The ranger there can also give you trail maps and descriptions. That area has spectacular lake vistas, with reasonably priced patio dining at the restaurant overlooking the lake. There's also a $10.00 pp scenic guided paddle boat ride that takes you around the lake. I hope you also have a chance to travel out of the valley to go to beautiful Sedona with red rocks, hiking and Pink jeep tours., Also please explore Jerome (a former mining/ghost town) near Sedona. The Haunted Hamburger is a great restaurant there in Jerome. Nearby Prescott has lots of hiking and good restaurants, but it will be cold in Jan. The downtown square and old Victorian houses of Prescott are worth the drive.

Re: golfing, there is a Ftn Hills city golf course called Desert Canyon right off Saguaro Blvd in Fountain Hills, which is quite nice, with beautiful views. Their restaurant ,called Desert Canyon Steak House is known for its great angus steaks, and is reasonably priced for lunch. It's got the best steak sandwich and steak salad in the area! Their other sandwiches and breakfasts entrees are fantastic also, and it's about the price of Denny's, but the ambiance is so much nicer. Their patio is beautiful with panoramic views. This is off the beaten path, so many visitors never see or find it. Follow signs on Saguaro Blvd a short distance north of Shea. For more golfing, there is SunRidge Golf Course and Eagle Mountain Golf Course, and also the Ft McDowell Indian Reservation Golf Course next to the casino and Radisson Hotel.

For modestly priced restaurants (eliminating fast food and chain restaurants) in Fountain Hills with spectacular views and patio dining, I recommend SunRidge Canyon Golf Club Ridge Room for breakfast, lunch and champagne Sunday brunch. Very reasonablel prices! I also recommend Desert Canyon Steak House for breakfast and lunch as mentioned above. Mama's Restaurant and Appian Way don't have the great views, but their food is good. In Scottsdale, Oregano's Italian Restaurant and Pita Jungle are great casual fun place to go for dinner, both with many delicious choices for food. You can't go wrong with Oregano's garlic bread, Chicken Ceasar salads, sandwiches and pizzas. Both of these restaurants are on Shea Blvd. near Scottsdale Road. Also, Chompie's Restaurant is like an authentic New York Deli on Shea Blvd. It has incredible breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and has won many awards for its breakfasts and mile high sandwiches. AZ88 restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale, with surprising great upscale atmosphere, has delicious food at unexpectedly reasonable prices. There are lots of other wonderful restaurants in Old Scottsdale, but the prices are much higher. At Scottsdale Fashion Square, there is Kona Grill, also one of my favorites. Great macadamia nut chicken and grilled salmon! They have delicious grilled salmon salads for under $10.00! The presentation of the food there is awesome. My Big Fat Greek Restaurant is a chain, but an excellent one. Delicious food at shockingly reasonable prices. The one on Mill Ave just north of Arizona State University is my favorite, because you can stroll up and down the streets there to browse the stores, people watch, get an ice cream, and go to the Tempe Town Lake a few blocks north. Enjoy! Have a great time in AZ! We love it here too!

Hi! I forgot to mention 2 more good FH restaurants. One is a new find--Fireside Grill, directly across the street from the fountain! Iit is attached to the Holiday Inn,but don't let that discourage you from going to this place. A group of us went there Wed night, and it was packed! Of course it helped that Wed was Margarita Night, with margaritas costing $1.00. There is nice ambiance inside or out on the patio. The restaurant has its own entrance and parking lot. Best of all is the food! There are so many delicious choices for appetizers and entrees. And the portions are not only huge, they are reasonably priced. (Make a reservation for dinner). Breakfasts and lunches are also good and easy on the wallet. Highly recommended!

The other restaurant that I want to mention is EuroPizza Cafe right on the sidewalk at the FH Lake park. It's casual dining, inside or on the patio, with delicious calzones, pizza and pasta dishes. The prices here also don't break the bank, and it's a popular place because the food is great. It's got unobstructed views of the fountain too, probably the best and closest views of the lake. Well, I hope this helps. Enjoy your stay in Jan.!

Hi, We are part time residents of Fountain Hills and just love it. We regularly use the free newspaper "Let's Go" for info on what is happening in the area. You can pick it up outside of a lot of stores. I would also second the other posters comments on Fireside Grille and Euro Pizza. Both are very good places and Fireside Grille has great happy hour specials. But our favorite restaurant in Fountain Hills is Terre Nostra. We feel the food is superb and the people are so nice. No views at all but everything else in enjoyable. We go there often.

We too like to hike and also use the hiking guide published in Let's Go. They also have a feature hike each month. Here is the link if you are interested.
