Safaris

Just beginning to look into a vacation to kwazulu looking for some help in finding sites for safaris, so I can get a sense of what is available and cost.

Try these places.co.za/game_lodges/kwazulu_game_reserv… and www.kznwildlife.com and www.safarikzn.com.

We have just returned from our 3 week self drive SA trip. We spent a lot of our time in Kwa Zulua Natal at Umfolozi Game Reserve in Mpila tented camp (self cater) Mkzue Game Reserve, Kosi Bay Lodge and Tembe elephant Park. There are also a number of private game reserves nearby, some $$$. We also visited this area last year and decided we should come again to stay in these parks as we just did day trips last year from our base in Hluluwe. Of course, there are other attractions e.g. St Lucia wetlands, Battlefields area around Dundee and environs, the Drakensberg mountains. It is a great choice for variety of attractions.

I've used the Phinda Reserve for years and recommend it for luxury safaris. They offer discounts for stays of 4 nights or more - and dividing those nights between 2 of their lodges in different parts of the reserve is a neat way to see more, and get more, for your money.

Having said that - the advice above from Nooee outlines a way to get a lot more for your money.. so you can consider both of our posts as options to consider.

We wanted to do some self catering as last year we found the meals at the safari lodges were many and much. We also wanted to get up when we wanted and do our own self driving around the parks. In all, we found it more up close and personal in the tented safari camps, especially as the animals roam around the tents. We did include stays at 2 private safari lodges on this trip but the idea of staying in private safari lodges for longer than our 6 days would be too much with the 5.30 am starts to the day. Your days are also quite regimented, hence our mix and match. We found this way suited us best and it was not soley based on the $'s.

Depending on your budget, have a look at the Pilanesburg Game Reserve, non malarial and 2 1\2 hrs from Johannesburg. Caters for all budgets, Golden Leopard for Manyane and Batgatla and then for more up market lodges, try Kwa Maritane and Bakubung. Also Black Rhino Reserve which has transversing rights into the Pilanesburg caters for all pockets.

Why would someone drive to Pilansburg if they are visiting KwaZulu-Natal?

MikeinMaine, use the advise from bwanadave and Nooee.

Pefect.
