How long (time) from Melalane to LS via CB/Melalane Gate

We pick up our hire car at 7am. We will stop in Melalane for groceries (conservatively) around 12noon.

How long does the drive take to Lower Sabie via the Melalane gate? How long via the Crocodile Bridge gate?

Thank you in advance

Difficult question to answer.

If you enter the park at Malelane, it is 108Km to Lower Sabie camp.

On tar, speed limit is 50KmH. On dirt, 40KmH

Just over two hours, at the maximum speed allowed,of you do not see anything. Who knows how long it can take if you stop for lots of sightings,, several hours longer, perhaps.

If you enter at Croc bridge, from Malelane, the distance to Lower Sabie is about 94Km.

About 45 minutes from Malelane to Croc bridge, then the last 40 Km is inside the park, so work on about an hour at the speed limit for the last 40Km, or longer, depending on what you see.

Personally, I'd enter at Malelane so that I could have the longer drive within the park, so I would have the chance of more sightings.

The middle of the day is not as good as early morning, or late afternoon for sightings, BUT good sightings can happen at any time, just the luck of being in the right place at the right time!

Hi again!

As per your Pm I have replied both ways to be sure you get this ok.

Yes you should be at Malelane for shopping around lunch time, and from there it’s just a short drive to the gate. There is no definite answer however.

I am sure you will make it to Lower Sabie either way, we certainly do. However on the day you may need to decide for sure which route you take and which gate you enter, depending on how you are going for time. for the following reasons.

If you enter Malelane gate you get to start game driving straight away. It is where we enter because we can’t wait to get in ! However it will take a while to get across to the main Lower Sabie road because the drive is all on gravel. There the speed limit will be 40kmh not allowing for sightings. The distance is about 57km so let’s say between one and two hours. You will then turn left to LS and it’s only another 35kms, this could take less than an hour with no sightings but more if you make stops along the way. So could really be anywhere between two and half hours upward

On the other hand if you are tight for time at all you should continue from Malelane and enter at Crocodile Bridge gate, its 55 kms to the CB gate but of course being on the main highway it won’t take anywhere near as long as driving in the park. From there straight up to Lower Sabie, again can be done in less than hour. Without stops should be less than two hours this way.

You also have to allow time for roadblocks, you should be ok south of Lower Sabie but the road follows the river from there onwards and often herd of elephants cross along here to go for their evening drinks and bathe in the river.

There are no picnic spots on these routes, the only stop would be the actual Croc Bridge camp, so have snacks and drinks in the car with you. Something you should always do anyway.

Also keep in mind that it does not matter how early you get into camp. If you arrive very early you can head out for a short game drive, or just sit and soak up the atmosphere, even just driving along the main road is great in this area. You can also just drive across the road to the Sunset Dam and enjoy sundowners with the hippos and other wildlife that congregate at this famous spot.

Enjoy !
