Family of 7 traveling To Argentina, Chile over winter break.

We are a family of 7 with two teen boys planning a 12 day trip to cover Buenos Aires, Santiago, Valparaiso and what else in this limited time? Traveling December 22-January 5.

How long to spend in BA and in Santiago? What other places are a must? We can fly between cities to save time. Is Easter Island too far to include? Is Iguazzu falls worth a day trip?

Other places i read in forums are: Tigre, Colonia del Sacramento, Salta, Parati.

If you were us (we are all 50 years old, active with 2 boys ages 15) what would you include in a 12 day trip?

Thank you

Since you have only 12 days you cannot see all of that.

Maybe fly in to Bs.As., have 2 full days there (3 nights).

Fly to Iguazu Falls, (needs 1 day traveling)

1 full day there (2 nights)

Fly to Santiago (needs 1 day traveling)

2 days there (3 nights)

And if there is one day left you can do a daytrip by bus to Valparaiso.

Here are sone suggestions.

Get some travebooks and read up where you are going.

Get all of the parties involved andget some ideas where everyone would like to go.

Everyone can do their own research too. If they dont, then they cant complain

Have everyone submit a list of 6 things for each country and have them ranked. Its not that all 6 will be dine it gives everyone something and then some.

See whats come up for each country.

Note that chances are you will be flying alot.

To get to easter island, budget 1 extra day to and from to make any connection flights. If you plan right and want to see santiago, you can do that before or after.

Also consider you will loose at the minimum 1/2 day everytime you move your base.

Last comment.

PRIORITIZE what you want to do and see.

One other thing is that you do NOT have to roam as a pack of people. You can breakuo into groups or solo and meetup for lunch , dinner or.

Not advisable to limit trip to only Chile and Arg. How about this>>>

Fly to Lima/Cusco (night in Cusco), train to Macha Piccu (1 night -Xmas eve here or in Cusco?) and back to Cusco, fly to SCL and immediate bus to spend 2 nights in Valparaiso (beach, wine tour - skip Santiago), fly to Puerto Montt (1 night), then combined boat /bus ride across Chile lakes to Bariloche , Ar (1 night), flight to BS As 3 or 4 nights (quiet NY eve), fly to Rio de Janeiro for until Jan 5 (day trips to beach towns near Rio), then home.

If that is too hectic, skip Cusco and Machu Picchu, fly right into SCL with immediate bus to Valparaiso. Spend Xmas even in Valpo, then do Puerto Montt for boat/bus ride to Bariloche, on to Bs As and Rio. Consider NY eve in Rio (expensive) or arrive Jan 2.

We just got back from 18 days in just Chile and we did not feel we had enough time. Our favorites were Torres Del Paine and San Pedro Atacama, with a few beautiful days near Santiago.

Sometimes less is more. You only have 12 days (could you extend this at all?). I would skip Chile and concentrate on Argentina - which is larger than Europe. You will have 3 somewhat dead days, Christmas Eve, Christmas day and new years day. It is summer in Argentina at that time and certain regions are going to be hot. Taking in the time of year and that you have teenagers this is what I would do. About 3 days in BA. Take a city tour, visit Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Recolta Cemetery, go to a tango show and on Sunday visit the San Telmo fair. Next about three or four days in Trelow region(its welsh). Visit Puerto Rawson to see their dolphins ( they look like small killer whales and like to race the boats). Go down to Punta Tombo and stay overnight at Estancia La Antoeta and see the Magellanic penguins - babies at this time of the year. and great fun for all. Then El Calafate to see the glaciers. Then if you want overnight at Iguazu falls. If you choose this option be warned that is will be hot - over 100 F is not uncommon. Being your limited time I would stay in the park, the hotel looks nice and has a decent sized pool ( I have always stayed in town). The falls are great but I have always visited in their winter. Back to BA.
