West Coast Trip-Suggestions on route to take after Yosemite

My husband and I are planning a West Coast Road Trip from Portland to the Grand Canyon. We have 11 full days to work with and a half day for travel in addition to that. After Yosemite we don’t know if we should spend more time in Yosemite and then head back near San Francisco and the surrounding area, or go down to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. The beginning up the trip is booked and we feel good about it, but after Yosemite we have 3 days to work with.

Does anyone have any good suggestions on whether to go to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, or can suggest another idea that would be closer to Yosemite.

Here is our schedule:

Fly into Portland around 11pm

Day 1 All day in Portland

Day 2 All day in Portland

Day 3 spend morning/afternoon in Portland Drive to Redwoods to spend the night (6 hr drive)

Day 4 Spend all day in Redwoods leave around 5 to drive to San Francisco (6 hr drive)

Day 5 All day in San Francisco

Day 6 All day in San Francisco

Day 7 Spend half the day in San Francisco drive to Yosemite to spend the night (3 hr drive to hotel)

Day 8 Spend all day in Yosemite spend the night in Yosemite

This was what we planned after that, but I did not book the places to stay yet or our flight home so we have flexibility with it.

Day 9 Leave for Vegas in the morning Arrive in Vegas around 1-3pm (7 hr drive)

Day 10 Spend majority of the day in Vegas leave around 5pm to the Grand Canyon (4.5 hour drive)

Day 11 All day in Grand Canyon

Day 12 Spend morning in Grand Canyon or in AZ take a later flight home

Thanks!

When is the trip? Booking accommodations could be a critical factor. Lodging is tight at parks. I can only help with Grand Canyon.

grandcanyonlodges.com/ 5 in park lodges, Xanterra - 888-297-2757

visitgrandcanyon.com/ 1 in park lodge - Yavapai Lodge - 877-404-4611

Tusayan: hotels in the village just outside the park (use travel site or TA)

nps.gov/grca/ park website for park information

Cancellations happen often in park lodging and don't appear on the website. If no availability on the website, call often and ask about availability.

You will receive lots of information on entry. GCNP South Rim is very self-touring. Read Top Questions at right in GCNP forum (on a PC not a phone; not in the mobile app). The park no longer has a newspaper but there is complete information on the park website about activities, shuttles, overlooks, etc.

You say you would fly home after Grand Canyon. Do you have flights booked and if so from where. There are no major airports near the Grand Canyon. Vegas is 5 hours and Phoenix a good 4 hours.

It is important to know when this trip willmtKeplace before meaningful suggestions can be made. Weather and daylight hours may affect the options.

In any case I would not recommend driving from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon at night. Traffic leaving LV at rush hour can be horrible. And while most of the drive is on freeways, the last hour, from Williams up to the Grand Canyon South Rim, is on a two-lane road through terrain well-populated with wildlife, including deer and elk which may be active at night. You really do not want to hit one, so extreme vigilance is required.

The trip is May 25th to June 5th. Thank you for your suggestions about where to stay Bob B.

I only booked a flight going since we are doing a one-way to Portland and then driving and flying out of another area. If the Grand Canyon is our last stop we will probably fly out of Phoenix, but it is hard that it would be four hours away to the airport.

Thank you for the suggestions Enzian about the commute from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. We were planning to leave around 5pm so maybe we should re-think the timing on that from a traffic, and safety standpoint.

Thanks!

If you can't leave LV by noon, you need to wait another day before driving to the Grand Canyon National Park.

Please keep checking road conditions in Yosemite. Yesterday they closed a main road into the park, 120, due to a huge fissure that just opened up the road for quite a long way. They have no idea how long it will take to repair it so the only road into the park now is 140 from El Portal. They had snow pictures on their Facebook page the other day and the ranger station check in at Tioga Pass is completely covered up with snow as are some ski huts. They usually open mid to late May but already saying it's questionable. You would likely exit the park that way to go Vegas, so keep in touch with their road openings and closures.
