Dachau, English tour or audio tour. And cab options

Has anyone done either tour and what do you recommend. Also is it possible to take a cab from Dachau train station to Dachau and avoid bus? Any idea on cost?

There are English tours at 11 am and 1 pm daily at the concentration camp in Dachau.

Both options are good the decision what to do depends on your personal preferences. If you use the audio guide to get good information and you can do the tour on your own pace. If you go on the guided tour you get good information and can ask questions and hear the questions and comments from other tour participants, but you are restricted to the pace of the tour. The guided tour lasts approx. 21/2 hours.

If you search the TA forum for this subject you will find many entries discussing this exact subject. Maybe it will help you make a decision what you would like better.

Of course there are taxis at the Dachau train station which will take you to the Dachau concentration camp. I assume this is dawhat you refer to when you say "Dachau" and not the nice town center Dachau. The distance is about 4 km, therefore the approx. taxi fare is 10 Euro.

On the other hand the bus from Dachau train station to the concentration camp (bus # 726) is included in the day ticket XXL (which you need to go from Munich to Dachau) and it is a 7 minute bus ride. The bus runs every 20 minutes.

Just a hint: When you are looking for a cab in Germany, better ask for a "taxi" - exen people with little to no English will understand that because the German word is also Taxi (the a pronounced like the u in "but"), and this is the word you will find on all signs.

There are always taxis standing in front of the station in Dachau. You will recognize them, they all have the same off-white color and a TAXI sign on top.

Type of tour depends on a few factors - the guided tour is very regimented as they need to shuffle you along at reasonable pace - stopping to talk about pertinent points of interest and keep up with their schedule - can also be a little bit difficult to hear the guides sometimes (bigger groups). However big advantage is the guides usually can give you some additional information or insight you won't find in literature of audio. Guides are usually very passionate and committed. Better option if travelling with more than a couple of people in your group and more time efficient.

If you have more time and like to really look and examine all of the information - as best you can in a single visit then the audio tour gives you more freedom to go at your own pace. I generally prefer this option as I am happy to spend much more time than the guided tour option.

Recommend you take the bus - it goes from just outside the train station and is punctual and efficient and as outlined - cost is included in the train ticket.

We opted for the self-guided audio and appreciated setting our own pace. There are some exhibits that you just feel compelled to linger over in reflection.

We opted for the audio tour and ended up shutting it off and just read the signs at each stop, which were very thorough and informational. It's a very easy bus ride, by the way, from the train station to the memorial.
