Trip to SF-Oak...worth stayin in Oak??

Hi,

We are 4 adults going to SF-Oak for 4 night (mostly for As and Giants game) in mid-June. We are considering all options for our stay. We plan on having 1 day to visit, and most of our days to go to the games. We will be using public transit to move around. Price in Oak (and Emeryville) are much more competitive than downtown SF. Anyone have tips or advice? We are not on a budget, but at the same time, we are not rich poeple!

Thank you

If you have never been to SF and are not on a tight budget, stay in SF. Easy to get to the As game by BART.

For the area around the baseball park in Oakland, its easiest to stay in San Francisco and stay at BART. There is nothing except the coliseum and the basepark park there to see.

Just FYI, people don't call Oakland "Oak". That is an abbreviation used in airport literature. As in your first use of it "SF-Oak"

The only benefit to staying in Oakland is that it's cheaper. For most everything else, it's not 'worth it' unless you're absolutely priced out of staying in SF. If you stay in the Union Square area of SF, you can walk or take transit to the Giants' games and take BART to the A's games, and walk to much of your sightseeing. If you stay in downtown Oakland, you'd have to take BART to all the games as well as your SF sightseeing.

All depends on your budget, imo. If you have the money for S.F., great. If you don't Oakland and other areas might be worth considering. A lot depends on your travel budget, available time, what you want to see/visit, etc.

To claim that the only "benefit" to staying in Oakland is that it's "cheaper" is false and offensive.

A recent transplant to San Francisco from a town of some note, New York City, I spend much of my free time visiting multi-racial, hipster Oakland. It lives up to what the world press of record has noted and far too many "San Franciscans" have not bothered to read. For example, the NY Times has placed on its prestigious annual list of cities to visit on numerous occasions, The UK Guardian, UK Telegraph, UK Express, The LATimes, Boston Globe, et al. have all posted articles and essays about Oakland's renaissance.

So, to those self-identified "San Franciscans" –- most of whom are neither native to San Francisco nor knowledgeable as to its history and that of the rest of the Bay Area–– who seem eager to uphold the tiresome narcissism (and not a few of its racisms and bigotries) of the now ethnically cleansed of my youth, I can only respond thus, "REALLY."

Suffice it to say, for an enumeration of Oakland sights very worth seeing, note these links:

Rene, whenever someone who wants to visit SF asks about staying outside of SF, be it Oakland, Berkeley, Marin, Redwood City, or down by the airport, the regulars here routinely advise to stay in SF. That makes perfectly good sense, as long as the visitor can afford it. The reality is that there's a whole lot more to see and do in SF.

It looks like you're fairly new to the Bay Area and Tripadvisor. Perhaps you should lurk a while longer before you start accusing the local TAs of dissing Oakland because they're racists and bigots.

I have to agree. There are many things to love about Oakland, but it objectively does not have the quality and variety of interesting things to do and see as in SF.

Starting off your posting on TripAdvisor by casting the long term members as racists and bigots is not a wise move.

"Neither native... nor knowledgeable."

Welcome to our newest brand-new newcomer, to both San Francisco and TripAdvisor, who certainly seems determined to make a grand entrance.

Imagine wanting to visit New York City and deciding to stay in Newark. Doesn't make much sense, does it? Unless prices are really out of whack. Anyway, I've been told Oakland is much nicer than Newark, but I haven't been, so can't confirm.
