We will be in Truckee June 6-12 - what are your top tips?!

Hi there, we are two families from New Zealand that have hired a house in Truckee for a week from 6-12 June. Our children range from 7-10 years. We have read that Emerald Bay is a must see, what else do you recommend we do whilst we are there? Also any suggestions of fantastic cafes for breakfast and great fine dining restaurants for dinner?

The must sees would depend on your interests, and there are many more must do things depending on your interests and level of activity you desire- let us know what you like to do. Driving from Truckee to the closest Tahoe areas in the North will likely add around an hour round trip with road construction delays, especially during the weekend. The Sand Harbor area is also an interesting view, and there are views from from the various ski lifts (check to see which are open) or hikes if you like that. You will be able to see sections of the (currently) roaring Truckee river on your drive into Tahoe each day and there are places to park for picture taking. You can hire a boat for the lakes in Truckee and Tahoe for closer views if you like to do that. Just about any activity and eating place you can imagine is available in the area (if you include driving in to Reno)- but some will be closed this early in the season and also some things might depend on your budget.

Hope this helps

Breakfast in Truckee....try the Squeeze In. It's tiny so it does get a line. Really great place.

Hello - I live in Truckee & have a 7 year-old & LOVE our summers! Here are some ideas on things to do & places to eat:

- Truckee Thursdays are great: they shut down downtown in the evening & you can walk, try out food trucks, they have a band, many art & craft vendors & games.

- wander through historic, downtown Truckee (shops, restaurants, train depot)

- Raft down the Truckee River (may or may not be open yet when you're here): raft from Tahoe City to River Ranch. Nice, slow float & the bus takes you back to the start when you're done.

- Bike ride along the Truckee River: from Squaw Valley to Tahoe City, awesome riverfront trail. Or, ride Truckee's Legacy Trail.

- check out Squaw Valley, home of the 1960 winter Olympics (there's a Village, shops, you can take the gondola up)

- spend time at Lake Tahoe, Sand Harbor is the most gorgeous beach - the one you see in most picture-perfect ads.

- take a cruise on Lake Tahoe (MS Dixie or maybe a smaller vessel though Action Water Sports at the Hyatt in Incline Village. If you do this, have drinks on the water at Lone Eagle Grille & catch the sunset).

- hike up Eagle Rock, outside of Tahoe City, or down Emerald Bay

- kayak from Tahoe Vista to Garwoods (lakefront restaurant) & enjoy a Wet Woody (famous drink) & lunch on the deck overlooking the lake

- visit Truckee River Winery for outdoor bocce with great wines

- downtown Truckee: Old Town Tap (they have a fabulous happy hour, too) & Marty's Café for breakfast, CofeeBar for excellent coffee & pastries

- Red Truck Café: Indian fusion at Truckee Airport-- soooo good!

- Full Belly Deli for a yummy & huge sandwich

- PJs at Grays' Crossing (good food, they have outdoor concerts every Tuesday & an amazing setting)

- downtown Truckee: Pianeta: great, nicer Italian, terrific ambiance

- app or drinks at Lone Eagle Grille in Incline Village, on the water

- Sunnyside is a favorite spot for sitting on the deck & having a nice lunch

Hope this helps, have a great stay!!

You are close enough to drive to Reno from Truckee as well

In Reno, there are many nice museums - art, automotive, discovery museum (great for children), Nevada state museum, planetariium.

There is also the Reno Aces baseball game which is a lot of fun.

In Sparks, they have a very nice IMAX movie theater. It has the most comfortable seats.

There are nice buffets in Reno such as at the El Dorado, Atlantis, etc.

Close to Truckee, besides Lake Tahoe there is Donner Lake as well as Boca Raton (two nice reservoirs but very nice for hiking and fishing ). Its very close to Truckee.
