Ideas for activities--October trip to Beaver Creek

We have never been to Colorado and are staying in a condo in Beaver Creek for a week in the middle of October. We are two couples in our late forties. I'm looking for fun things to do, neat things to see, day trips to take and good places to eat. Any help will be much appreciated! We love scenery and wine!

The hiking center at Beaver Creek (top of the escalators to the right) has ideas and maps for many lovely hikes. You may rent bikes in Vail and Edwards (possibly Avon as well, not sure) and ride on the paved paths between the villages if you're reasonably fit. Fly fishing (with a couple of guides for the group) would be fun. There are several establishments. We prefer Alpine Outfitters in Edwards. (Edwards is the village just a couple of miles west of Avon) A bit long, but rewarding motor trip south from I70 through Minturn, Red Cliff and Leadville over Independence Pass through Aspen and back to I70 would be as scenic as you can get. check www.independencepass.org The highway has sheer drop offs, so I wouldn't attempt if the weather is iffy. Remember, it can snow now! Try Vin48 in Avon (village at the base of Beaver Creek) for wine tasting and/or dinner. Zino in Edwards has a nice wine selection and menu. Be sure to include a day in Vail which is 10 minutes or so to the east, for shopping and dining. The spa at the Hyatt in Beaver Creek is a nice indulgence. You will be there in "low" season, so many restaurants will have discounts and there will be no crowds.

Grouse Mountain Grill in the Pines Lodges is also excellent.

Grouse Mountain Grill is great and have an awesome wine selection. The good thing is that (like stated above) you'll be there right before the ski season kicks off which means DEALS! Pick up the local paper or ask the people at the front desk where they like to go. You're bound to stumble upon something incredible.

In terms of activities Colin Hay, the singer from Men At Work, will be playing on Oct. 14 at the Vilar Center.

Hope you have a great time!

If you are planning any day hikes, keep in mind this time of year is hunting season in Colorado. For the Beaver Creek area this is the schedule:

Limited Elk (1st season) Oct. 16-20

Combined (deer/elk) (2nd season) Oct. 23-31

Don't let this deter you from enjoying our great outdoors here in Colorado, but you may want to wear some orange and other bright clothing is you are planning to get off the road and explore for a bit.

Enjoy your trip!

Do you happen to know if Vin48 is in walking distance from the Westin Riverfront Resort? Aside from weather impacts...

Thanks!

Vin48 is about 3 blocks from the Westin, easily walkable with sidewalks along the way.
