I am driving for DEN to vail / beavercreek Saturday, staying for 1 week, Given the weather, will we need a 4 wheel drive SUV or is regular sedan ok to rent.

Arrived last night 3/17 and boy am I glad we got a 4 wheel drive. The drive to Evergreen was treacherous. Ride to Vail early morning 3/28 was also terrible roads. We made it safely, but 4 wheel helped a lot. Sun is now out and hopefully the roads are improving!

Timing was on your side. Tuesday (3/15) parts of Vail Pass were reopened after being closed down Monday night due to multiple accidents (my CDOT Twitter account said 40 individual ones). Vail had 2 emergency shelters open for hundreds of stranded drivers. Lots of blowing snow made visibility a problem and the roads super slick so 4WD would not have benefited anyone at that point.

Looks like no snow predicted for Vail for the weekend - hope you have a great trip.

We've had some rough drives this past week, glad you made it safely. Looks like some big sunny days ahead and a bit of snow next week to freshen it all up!
