The best places to stay is the Ritz Carlton downtown...also has a Beach Club on Lido Key near St. Armands..free shuttle service to both

The Aloft - a new hotel in downtown Sarasota..walking distance to downtown and Selby Gardens.

Hotel Ranola is a former apartment building turned hotel in a good downtown location

Hotel Indigo, Hyatt Regency -both are further from the downtown near US 41 but is still walkable from either place.

Depending when you plan to visit, there are more hotels under construction downtown.

Reviews of each place here on TA.

Are you a "beach" person? If so, just a note that Sarasota sits on the bay - the barrier islands across the bay have beaches and sit on the Gulf of Mexico. Prices depend on the area where you're staying on the islands - and the duration of your stay there.

Fabulous restaurants throughout Sarasota and the surrounding areas ... you might want to check on the TripAdvisor site to see what's "out there" (a lot of restaurants are seafood-oriented but definitely not ALL - very eclectic!). Ringling Museum (www.ringling.org) is wonderful ... art museum, circus museum, mansion, etc. are on the property - a not-to-be missed spot to visit. Also, Mote Aquarium and St. Armand's Circle are nearby ... but not within walking distance of downtown Sarasota.

Marina Jack's II is docked in downtown ... fancy restaurant, plus a patio room with drinks, appetizers, light meals. Their cruise boat goes out into the bay and Gulf twice a day and serves lunch/dinner - definitely within walking distance of hotels in downtown Sarasota.

If you want to be on t he beach, walking distance to restaurants- try the Holiday Inn Lido key.

It isnt on the beach persay- but across the small street from the main Lido beach. A tiny crosswalk and you are there. Fab sand.

My room overlooked the beach and you could even see the road. It was nice.

Yes, if you want to stay on the beach, you need to look at one of the islands (Longboat, Siesta, Lido).

Watch out for the resort fees in that area. I think that stupid practice is very common over there. Look at the fine print to make sure you understand all of the costs. If no resort fee is shown on your reservation, dispute it as it must be disclosed in advance to be legal.

I don't think the OP mentioned the beach in the question.

They didn't, SRQGirl - just giving the OP that option (when we first visited Sarasota, we were surprised that the beach wasn't in "Downtown" - were enlightened only when we got there as people had told us that "Sarasota sits on the Gulf.").
