Lava Hot springs, ID.

We are staying a week at a timeshare there in October- 2011. any suggestions of things to do and see in the area. We plan a day trip to Yellowstone. Is that doable? Is October too late to tube down the river? (probably?) thanks for any help.

Hi hope010,

Yeah, October is probably a little late to be tubing down the river (that's really more of a Memorial Day to Labor Day thing). You can still sit in the natural hot springs, though (private business, right on the river).

From Lava to Yellowstone is an ambitious day trip, but it can be done. Depending on when you come (early October versus late October), you may encounter road closures due to snow. If you just want to cruise up to Old Faithful and back, that's going to take you about 4 hours each way (on clear roads). Go up through Idaho Falls and West Yellowstone, MT and then come back through Grand Teton National Park (through Jackson and all the way down to Montpelier and back up). You'll spend most of your day in the car, but you'll get to check out a lot of scenery.

I'd recommend a day in Jackson, Wyoming (charming, quintessential western town). Near Lava, in Soda Springs, Idaho, be sure to check out Hooper Springs (naturally carbonated spring water) and the "man made" lava flow at the quarry across from Hooper park (really cool!) - it's just up the road from Lava. Soda also has a man made geyser that you can stand under and get wet (if you're adventurous).

Thanks for the information. On the way back, from Yellowstone coming through Jackson, what are the chances of getting a motel overnight along the way at one of the towns? We will be at the time share Sept. 23 -30, 2011. Changed dates to hopefully avoid snow.

If it isn't on a weekend I would say your chances are pretty good. We've been able to find rooms in Southern Id on the spur of the moment many times including Lava. Though some haven't been the best accommodation.
