This weekend....the 4th of July!

We are headed up this weekend for the first time...using a friend's house. We have three kids....ages 11, 9, and 6. Would love any suggestions for activities, fireworks, anything at all you think might help us plan a fun family getaway!

www.grayling-mi.com can give you a few ideas. Kinda a rural area with no big attractions around but a few simple things in life are sometimes the biggest blessings. Enjoy your stay and time with family.

We also are coming up for the first time we'll be sailing on Higgins Lake. What should we expect... are there any restaurants on the Lake or a grocery with in walking distance?

We will be headed up for the weekend with our sailboat and wondered what to expect. Are there any restaurants with docks on the lake or a grocery with in walking distance? also heard that there are 3 launches 2 in state parks wondering where the third is?

Gerrish Park, So corner of the lake.

If you pull up the area on Google Earth you can search for various things. If you search for "boat ramps" or "boat launch", 3 will pop up ... North State Park, South State Park, and Gerrish.

The lake is primarily residential, there are no real restaurants / stores with dockage ... the town of Higgins lake has a store, not sure if they have any transient / public dockets though.

There is Call of the Wild in Grayling. A sort of museum with MI wildlife, history told in diaroma style.

It’s Higgins Lake...be sure to enjoy the lake but with the hot weather apply & reapply sunscreen or wear UV protective clothing. Waterski, tube, snorkel, swim, jump off boat, get back in, jump off boat again. Float. Fishing. Sailing...often sailboat regattas, many sailboats racing around markers....a sight to see. Try scuba, rental on north end. 3 boat launches are N & S State Parks, then the county ramp NW side. State park passes required at state parks, county pass needed at ramp on NW end. I believe the Gerrish ramp is pretty shallow. There’s also B&B marina on the north end, with small put in fee. When not so hot there are a lot of hiking trails across from North State Park which end up being cross country ski trails in winter. Unfortunately dirt biking, winter - snowmobiling. Ice cream spots around the lake. Just sit around the lake at dusk and enjoy the many home show fireworks let off all around the lake. Also Roscommon puts on quite a show and pick the right spot on the lake and you can see Risco’s in the distance while watching the lake ones. ( The VFW at the North end use to do a great show of fireworks, but that has stopped.). Been coming to Higgins Lake 41 years as annual family trip & have cottage in area for 21 years. It is rural, not your shopping place or city vibe that things are within short walking distance.
