Noirmoutier - advice on what to do?

We will be in La Gueriniere, Noirmoutier at the end of July 2013 for one week. Family of four - two boys 11 and 13. Any advice on places to go, where to avoid ( I know it will be busy!), activities, less crowded beaches anywhere? Have read TA reviews but would be great to hear from someone who has been there at that time of year maybe? Seem to be gathering that beaches are often seaweed covered, is there anyway of knowing which ones are clear of seaweed in the summer months? All advice gratefully received. By the way, we are camping and will have car. Thanks in advance

Never been there but as with all such questions my advice would be to get a guidebook or two on the region and also use the local tourist office websites:

You also need good maps. I like the Michelin maps. You can buy the Michelin maps from their website and here is a link to the page that shows you the 1:200,000 scale maps of France: http://tinyurl.com/4bt96ev

We loved Noirmoutier. A charming island. There is a small water park, which is worth an afternoon. But the best thing to do is to hire bikes and explore the island. It is very cycle friendly, with cycle paths all around. You can cycle to other villages, and there are lots of almost deserted beaches if you explore further than the main ones. The town of Noirmoutier is nice - lots of squares, cafes and little shops. I think also a small aquarium, though we didn't visit that one.

I wouldn't have considered Noirmoutier a rip-off, it is the Ile de Ré that has a reputation for chicness and high prices.

I do suggest always using the bridge for access to and fro. The gué may be cute but the road is inevitably very rough and covered in seaweed and sea-water puddles, worth a photo of the road disappearing into the sea at high tide though.
