New Buffalo vs. Union Pier vs. South Haven

Hi, we are looking to spend 2-3 days in southern Michigan along the coast line. It will only be me and my husband-no children. It looks like there are great wine tours which we will definitely partake in but I'm having trouble deciding which town would be the best for us to stay in. We're looking between New Buffalo, Union Pier, South Haven. We will definitely want to spend a day on the beach and a day around town so which town has the best beaches and best shops/dining? We were pretty set on New Buffalo until I started seeing some mixed reviews on the beaches (rocky, e.coli contamination in the water, dirty beach, etc.). It is hard to tell from the internet which town holds the most character/things to do. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

How did your trip go? My wife and I are looking at the same area for the end of June. Any suggestions or info?

My first pick in the www.beachtowns.org region would be ...South Haven, MI... based on your info. The only town where it is an easy walk to both piers from downtown. Only 20 minutes from ...Watervetliet, MI...

for a casino. Www.hollandattractions.com ...Saugatuck, MI...Holland, MI... are only 30 minutes away for dune rides, mansion tours and gardens. Also the same distance is ...Saint Joseph, MI... and ...Kalamazoo County, MI... is only 45 minutes away.

Some of the best beaches with less crowds will be the state parks. That being said, if your main focus is wine tours with your town and beach, pick Saint Joseph.

New Buffalo would be the least of my considerations, since they built all the condo's there it's mostly people coming from Chicago on the train, unless you wanted to go to the casino. It does put you at the southern end of the SW Michigan wine tour.

For a town with a very nice beach and things to do, St. Joe, or South Haven, both are eclectic and offer things to do, with a beach.

A follow up question was posted the 17th, as the original had no replies, thus, the follow up is quite recent indeed.
