Romantic weekend getaway

Hey Everyone, I would like to take my wife for a romantic weekend to celebrate her 30th birthday. We will be driving from chicago for a 3 day weekend (labor day weekend). A historic B&B would be preferred over a mega hotel. What we are looking for is a place with beautiful views and beaches, history, wineries and excellent food. We will probably bring our bikes to cruise around as well. Our budget is about 200/nt for hotel. May spend more if its worth it. We are willing to drive up to 2-5 hours if its worth it.

Any recommendations would be great!

St Joseph would be a fun place for you. Labor Day weekend is usually the last busy time. There are 2-3 B&Bs in town overlooking the lake . Check out www.sjtoday.com You might have to up your $$ amount tho!

just so you know, the michigan beachtowns will be very crowded over labor day weekend, especially if the weather is good (which it usually is).... last year, we went to st joe and the beach was jammed...

try this:

and here are a few suggestions that i copied from one of my previous posts from last year...some may meet your criteria, others may meet your budget:

stayed at chalet on the lake a coupla years ago.... kinda pricey for what you get and their beach is mediocre for MI standards.... but it's only minutes from st joe and there are several pools on the grounds.... if you stay there, recommend getting a cottage as close to the lake as possible within your budget... the very closest ones are very expensive.....

if you book after labor day.....^^^^

stayed at the sun n sand last summer and may go again in august..... very close to south haven..... read my review..... try to get a family suite, if available....

this one gets mixed reviews on TA, but we stayed a coupla years ago and we didn't think it was that bad.... get the suite...kinda pricey but the hotel is close to everything, plus st joe is great for kids.... search my review....

we stayed at the HIE st joe a coupla years ago... it's a newer-nicer property than the silver beach, BUT, it's 2 miles from downtown.... if they had a bike lane along the way, it wouldn't be bad, but no bike lane, thus dangerous riding, especially with kids..... get the suite, tho again, it will be pricey.... make sure you book the HIE in ST JOE, NOT benton harbor....... search my review....

stayed at the bluewater a few years ago and loved it... our room was small since it was the only one available, but they do have suites.... location is key and can't be beat..... see my review.....

stayed at the beachway about 5 years ago... absolutely loved the place.... suites available, but kinda pricey....

but overall, if your heart is set on NW MI, and you wanna feel like you're getting away from it all, go to beaver island.... it's nothing like mack island as far as crowds and touristy stuff..... while sw MI is great, you can alway go there as it's closer and easier to get to.....
