Great Falls to Old Faithful

Some friends and I will be in Great Falls next week and were thinking about a day trip to Yellowstone to see the old faithful geyser.

According to Google maps it's a 5 hour drive each way (I15 south to MT 69, to MT 359 to US 287, etc). Just wanted to ask some locals if it actually takes this long? I've found Google can sometimes be off when it comes to secondary highways in their time estimates.

So basically how long is the drive, and which route do you recommend?

Thanks,

J.

Yes.....it will take you about 5 hours to get from Great Falls to Old Faithful, maybe longer if there are any animal jams once you get inside Yellowstone Park. It would be one very long day trip to make especially since the days are getting shorter. You would need to leave Great Falls in the dark and you will be returning in the dark.

The best option, if possible, would be to stay in West Yellowstone overnight.

Yes, it took us about that long. What time of year are you going?

Weather, construction, and traffic can slow you down. You would probably want to stay overnight and then you'll have more time to see Yellowstone. It's a beautiful park.

Thank you for the inside info everyone. We only have 24-48 hours for the trip to GF, so I guess Yellowstone will have to wait until next time
