Anyone know if whale watching in July is a viable activity off the coast of Montauk or if it's a waste of time?

It's a viable activity but you're never guaranteed what you'll see. The issue is what would you do instead and will YOU feel you wasted your time if you don't see any.

Here's an account of a trip

Here's a record of what days last year they saw whales.

Whale watching is expensive and doesn't always deliver. You are more likely to see humpback whales off the coast of Cape Cod. Plus, if you're prone to sea sickness, I don't recommend it. You travel way out into the ocean and if the water is choppy, you're doomed. You'll spend a lot of money, probably not see any whales and may get sea sick. Your call.
