Charleston in Feb with Kids

Spending two nights in February to break up a long road trip to Florida. We are mid-thirties, with 4 kids 1-7 years old. Looking for family friendly hotels and restaurants in the historic district, along with any kids friendly activities. So far looking at aquarium. The kids are as well mannered as can be expected for their ages, so casual restaurants with a kid friendly menu would be our best bet. Thanks in advance!

You might be able to take advantage of a deal, if you do some quick research and book on Monday.

There is the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry which is perfect for that age group. Around the block is the Charleston Museum. You might check if there are any special events at either of these. There is also the Best Friend of Charleston train on that same block. The Aquarium is smaller and expensive. I am assuming you have a car so the best value would be Charles Towne Landing State Park in West Ashley with an animal forest and replica of the Adventure, shipping vessel. There is a tram ride to the boat and around the park.

I am assuming you will not be in town during Southeastern Wildlife Expo which is in February and has quite a few events for kids. The prices of hotels skyrocket around that event. There are also an extra 30,000 people in downtown.

The Wildlife Expo is Feb 16,17 and 18. Avoid Charleston like the plague at that time!! Everything (hotels, restaurants) will be booked beyond capacity.

Oh my. We will be there on the last day, arriving late in the day on the 19th. While the historic district seems as though it would be the most convenient, maybe that would be better for a visit and stay in a less congested area? They love anything outdoorsy and wildlife. And any restaurants that are pretty kid friendly? Thank you all so much for the suggestions so far - they are very helpful!

If you are not arriving until the last day, you may be okay.

When you head south on 17, from Charleston, you may want to stop for a visit at the Caw Caw Interpretive Center, great for the kids to run around a bit.

This will only be maybe an hour or so from the Historic District, so you will not have driven far, may be too early to stop.

Fleet Landing restaurant is good for kids, the only restaurant with water views in the Historic District. Do make reservations.

Waterfront Park is a good place for kids to stretch their legs, find a swing on the pier for the adults to take a break. No splashing in February!!!

We love the aquarium, the new sea turtle hospital is full of hands-on stuff for the kids (and adults, alike). Great place to spend a couple of hours and you will more than likely see dolphin from the back deck.

By late in the day on Sunday, things will be winding down. I think you will be OK.
