Day trip to Charleston

We are planning a day trip to Charleston from Murrell’s inlet with our 9 year old triplet boys. We were considering the following: Fort Moultrie, Fort Sumter, Patriot’s Point, and a carriage ride by Rainbow Row. We are looking for suggestions regarding which would be the most enjoyable & affordable for 9 year old boys, and also what we would have enough time to do?

Drop Ft. Sumter from the mix, will take too long and not much to see, lots of damage from our last couple of hurricanes/tropical storms..

You will have plenty w/Ft. Moultrie, Patriots Point and the carriage tour.

Check to see if you can find reduced price tickets for PP and the carriage on Groupon.

You can't be guaranteed that your carriage will go past Rainbow Row. There are 3 different routes, they are chosen by lottery, after you have boarded the carriage and check in with the City of Charleston.

If it's really important to you, just stop by the Visitors Center on Meeting Street, pick up a map and walk.

You might want to just drive down to the Battery, find a place to park and walk from there.

You're trying to cram a heck of a lot in, in a single day. If you are doing this during the summer, I can promise that by the time you get to the Rainbow Row portion of your day (whether by carriage or walking), those boys will be pretty cranky in the heat. They should enjoy your plans up until that point.

Thank you, Beth. We are actually in Murrells Inlet for spring break and are considering going this Tuesday. I had heard that Fort Sumter, although iconic, was not as nice as Fort Moultrie, so thank you, this helps a lot. I’ll definitely look for a groupon for discounts to the attractions, and we will consider just walking to Rainbow Row from the Battery. What order for the attractions do you suggest would be best?

Keep an eye on this weather. At this point, weather shows a 20% chance of rain. If this system slows up or shifts, it could rain into Tuesday which would not make for a good day. We're watching closely for a trip out of Charleston on Tuesday and are hoping it comes through early and has cleared out for our drive.

You can only get to Ft. Sumter by boat and that is fairly time consuming. Everything else on your plan, you can do at your own pace. The boys will probably enjoy Patriot's Point the most.

If it's raining, Fort Moultrie and Patriots Point are your best bets. Fort Moultrie has long underground tunnels and bunkers. The little indoor museum is very good for young people, and there's a movie to watch. At Patriots Point, the aircraft carrier Yorktown has several hours worth of below-decks interest.

To answer your question about order of things, maybe do this (I'm thinking about traffic all the way around here). Assuming that you will get started at a decent time to get to CHS by 9:00ish or shortly thereafter. You may encounter some traffic as you approach Mt. Pleasant.

Head straight into town, first thing, go to the Visitor's Center, then down to the Battery for your view of Rainbow Row.

Then, when you've had enough of that, go for Patriot's Point. Your kids would probably love to have lunch there (we get reports that it's fun, I have not done it) on the carrier.

After PP head towards Ft. Moultrie.

If you are still in town at dinner time, consider stopping at Poe's, before leaving the island.

Thank you! I How much time do you think we will need for PP & Fort Moultrie?
