Charleston and area north or south along the coast?

We are planning to visit Charleston late Sept. or early Oct. for about a week. We would like see quieter parts of the coast and historic sites. We have considered flying into Charleston and out of either Savannah, GA or possibly Myrtle beach instead, but only want to go one direction or the other, unless we just stay around Charleston instead. Definitely want to visit a couple of plantations too. Any advise & suggestions will sure be appreciated.

Georgetown to the north or Beaufort to the south, two adorable quaint small historic towns. Some people prefer Beaufort since Georgetown is still a mill town with smokestacks and industry. We have a slight preference for Georgetown.

There are 5 plantations each about a half hour drive from the main historic district of Charleston. There are several plantations between Charleston and Georgetown. There are no plantations in Savannah, they were destroyed in the Civil War. Beaufort (1711) is the 2nd oldest town in SC (after Charleston ~ 1670) and Georgetown(1729) is the 3rd oldest. You could easily spend an entire week in Charleston and not see and do all that there is. If you have not already done so, please look to the right side of this page for Top Questions about Charleston (on a computer, won't show up on a phone). It will give you loads of info on what is available to see and do in this area.
