Hi Khatter - We stayed there a few years ago and didn't find it touristy at all. It has great access to the Cades Cove loop entrance to the park. There is a small shopping center with an IGA, some tubing companies, a few restaurants and hotels, so it definitely has services but it has a small town feel. We used Dogwood Cabins and found them really helpful in locating a cabin that served our needs. We also wanted a mountain view with privacy - They recommended Angel's Loft ,which is on the end of a cul de sac and had no neighbors (at the time), which was perfect for us. Good luck with your planning!
If you stay in Townsend (or even if you don't!) you must eat at Little River BBQ. They have the best fried pickles (my husband and I have seriously talked about them every day since last May). The Little River runs right behind it, and you can sit at a picnic table on the patio and listen/watch the river.
You also get a discount on tubing from the shop right next door if you are interested in that sort of thing.
Thank you! Your response was very helpful.
As you've read, Townsend is not very touristy. We stayed at one particular rental 3 years in a row. We'd still be going there now, if the owner hadn't gotten out of the rental business. Townsend is very laid back compared to P/F and Gat/burg. Another great area to stay is the Wears Valley area. Between these two communities you'll find hundreds of cabin rentals to choose from.
