East Dorset is just north of Manchester, and about 30 minutes south of Rutland. The town is within an easy drive of under an hour to severial fine down hill ski mountians, and nordic parks. If your interested it is the home town of the founders of AA [Bill W]. There is quite a bit of hiking in the area, and beautiful rural drives. Also this time of year, its a hub for the State snowmoble trails. There are some fine place to eat in town as well. It's also got a great trout river [the Mad Tom], and a first class small lake in Lake Emerald, which in the summer is a great place to cool off, but at this time of year has wonderful ice fishing.

What where you hoping to do in East Dorset?

Thank you for the info. I'm actually going to the Wilson House for a few day's for some R+R with my girlfriend. Our main purpose is to "keep it simple" and look for some antique shops etc. Enjoying a nice local resteraunt would be nice too.

There is a nice little resturant in E Daort called the Chantecleer [1(802)362-1616]. I haven't ate there in severial years, but remember the food was very good.

If you are driving south into Manchester [all of a five minute drive] you'll have an endless choice of places to eat. There is alot of shopping in Manchester, be sure to check out Orvis Flag Ship store and their new outlet. Also be sure to stop in to the Northshire Book store.

There are a great number of antique place in the area. Just a little farther south in E Arlington there are two very nice Antique malls. This web site will give you an idea of places to check out http://www.vtliving.com/antiques/sout.shtml

I would also like to recomend if your feeling like trying something a little active in the area, there is X-country sking at Hildene in Manchester. This is a nice break from the shopping and a reminder that Manchester is a beautiful place. Or for something faster in Winhall [again about five minutes to the east] there is the Pincle Snowmoble tours.

Oh and one more thought for you on a place to eat. Just to north of E Dorset in Danby [again about five minutes], you can get a really nice meal in the White Dog Tavern 1(802)293-5477

Check out the Merck Forest and Farmland Center which is about 5 miles up the road. It is an amazingly beautiful place. You can cross country ski, snowshoe, sled or watch the horses in the pasture. If it is spring you can see them make maple syrup in the barn.
